DISABILITIES
An international NGO in consultative status with the United Nations
Dr. Thompson attends a high-level meeting in New York at
the United Nations

Representing the International Human Rights Association for American Minorities
(IHRAAM), Dr. Kathleen Thompson attended the High Level Meeting on
Disability and Development at the United Nations (UN) in New York on
September 23, 2013.

Dr. Thompson is an assistant professor in the Department of
Counseling, Social Work and Leadership at Northern Kentucky
University. The New York meeting was a landmark event for the global
disability movement and the General Assembly of the UN. The General
Assembly adopted the document entitled “Outcome Document of the
high-level meeting of the General Assembly on the realization of the
Millennium Development Goals and other internationally agreed
development goals for persons with disabilities: the way forward, a
disability-inclusive development agenda towards 2015 and beyond.”

There are over a billion people in the world who live with disabilities.
People who live with disabilities are the “poorest of the poor” around
the world. As Ban Ki-moon, the Secretary General of the UN, said at the
onset of the meeting, “every member of the human family should have
a chance to live their life fully…everyone should have the right to
happiness, to see the sun and to expand their horizons.”

Through IHRAAM, Dr. Thompson is looking to partner with disability
NGOs across North America to advance disability policy research
focusing on the unique needs of African Americans, Hispanic
Americans and Indigenous Canadians. Dr. Thompson’s goal is to
collaborate with the UN and the World Health Organization to develop a
coalition of disability researchers working collaboratively to advance the
human rights of North American ethnic minorities living with disabilities.
